AMD recently started shipping lower core count / higher clock EPYC 7F's, that's a much more comparable CPU to the Xeon Gold series. Epyc/Rome really marks the return of wider server/HPC market support for AMD with Epyc/Naples getting AMD’s foot back in the door in the mainstream server market. How much longer before Micron launches a competitor to Intel’s NVM/3D-XPoint DIMMs and Micron has already announced its X100 NVMe SSD 3D-XPoint(QuantX branding) competition back in Oct of this year. So that’s similar to what Nvidia’s NVLink/NVLink2 is doing to interface the Tesla GPU accelerators to OpenPower Power9/Power10 on some HPC design wins. Last month, Intel compared its new Ice Lake-based 32-core Xeon processors to the 64-core EPYC 7742 and claimed that the Xeons thumped AMD despite having fewer cores. Aside from that, your workload is EITHER suited to high core count / low clock speed CPU's like the EPYC 7742 -OR- it is suited to lower core count / high clock speed CPU's like the Xeon Gold or Platinum. Please don't depend on a person in a Dell call center to determine the optimal server configuration. These are $6,950 list price parts. Some will want Intel’s unique AVX-512 / VNNI features, DCPMM. Performance just depends on your exact workloads vs. the Epyc model you're looking at; some workloads do favor the higher clock speeds, but keep in mind that IPC (instructions-per-clock) vary from Intel to AMD and generation to generation -- it's stuff to be expected, but again needs to be kept in mind. Most of those … This is an exact parallel to how accelerators like the NVIDIA Tesla V100S, Intel’s next-gen Xe HPC GPU, Intel’s Nervana NNP-T, Intel’s new Agilex FPGAs, Xilinx Versal AI Core ACAP, Habana Labs Gaudi AI training accelerator, the Graphcore C2 IPU, and even the Cerebras Wafer Scale Engine AI chip are designed.
